How can a hotel or restaurant prepare for a professional food photo shoot?

The preparation of a food photo shoot and the optimal cooperation between the photo team (food stylist and food photographer) and the hotel or restaurant client is crucial to the success of a photo shoot.

We show you how to do this in just a few steps.

1 - Discuss ideas and requirements

First of all, the client must discuss the ideas and requirements with the chef and determine the dishes to be photographed. It is important to know the target group (guests) and to take the kitchen's own philosophy into account.

Once the dishes have been specified, the client provides images that document the setting of the restaurant. This includes photographing dishes, tables and the entire atmosphere to give the photo team a comprehensive impression of the location. Simple cell phone pictures are completely sufficient for this. This information is then made available to the photo team so that they can develop a customized image concept.

2 - The decision of the photo props

LEARN MORE ABOUT FOOD AND DRINK PHOTOGRAPHY

In food and drink photography, photo props are the various objects and materials used to create a complete setting for the shots. These include crockery, cutlery, textiles such as napkins or tablecloths, backgrounds and other objects such as vases or special decorative items.

These props are essential to create the desired ambience and aesthetics in the photos. They can support the appearance of the food and reinforce the visual story that is to be told in and with the images.

Piquant Production decides together with you whether the in-house tableware and tables should be supplemented with other props from the Piquant Production stock. This flexibility makes it possible to adapt the setting even more specifically to the respective needs and ideas without having to search for new props at great expense.

This allows us to ensure that each image has a unique aesthetic and conveys your brand message in the best possible way.

3 - Deciding on the location - on location or in the photo studio?

The main difference between food photography in the studio at Piquant Production or on location at the customer's premises lies in the setting and the logistics.

In the photo studio at Piquant Production, a new, often fictitious world is created to generate the desired atmosphere and mood for the shots. The construction of the setting can be elaborate in order to create a specific scenery that is intended to convey a certain - previously defined - feeling to the viewer. This sometimes requires complex backdrops and props.

Piquant Production's photo-food studio offers an ideal working environment for food photography and food film production. With a professionally equipped kitchen, an extensive stock of props and high-quality photographic equipment for pictures and films, all in the same room, effective work is guaranteed.

The short distances between the kitchen, food stylist and photographer mean that all team members can work together seamlessly. This enables efficient communication and coordination throughout the entire process, from preparing the dishes to styling and shooting.

The integrated working environment helps the entire team to develop its full potential and achieve optimal results. In short, Piquant Production's food photo studio offers the perfect conditions for successful and efficient food photography and production.

Food photography on location, directly in the restaurant or hotel, offers both advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is that the setting is often set up more quickly, as the existing location is used as a photo backdrop. However, the distance from the kitchen to the set can be longer, which poses logistical challenges and can affect the process. In some cases, however, it is also possible to set up an artificial set at the client's home, as is also done in the photo studio, which is located near the kitchen, in order to reduce the distance from kitchen to set.

Another aspect is that additional props have to be transported to the client, which requires planning and organization. In contrast to working in a photo studio, where the equipment is in the same room, there is less flexibility for spontaneous changes or additional props.

Our top recommendation for you
